About Hangul and this quiz

Hangul (한글) is the Korean alphabet, created by King Sejong in 1443. It is famously logical: 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels combine into syllable blocks, so most learners can read Korean within a day or two of practice. This quiz shows sounds in Revised Romanization — the official system used on Korean road signs and in textbooks. Start with the basic 24 letters, then switch to all 40 to add double consonants (ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ) and compound vowels (ㅐ ㅔ ㅘ ㅢ …).

Frequently asked questions

What is Hangul?
Hangul is the Korean alphabet, created by King Sejong the Great in 1443. It has 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels that combine into syllable blocks — for example ㅎ+ㅏ+ㄴ makes 한 (han). It is considered one of the most logical writing systems in the world.
How long does it take to learn Hangul?
Most learners can read Hangul after a few hours of practice — it was deliberately designed to be easy. Play a few rounds of the basic 24 letters, then add the double consonants and compound vowels with the “All (40)” setting.
What do sounds like “g/k” or “eo” mean?
They are Revised Romanization, the official system for writing Korean sounds with Latin letters (used on Korean road signs and in textbooks). Some letters like ㄱ sound between g and k depending on position, so both are shown.
