About this worksheet maker

Every worksheet is drawn in your browser as a crisp vector clock, so it prints sharply at any size — no account, no watermark, no limit. Each sheet has a number from 1 to 9999: the same settings and number always rebuild the same clocks, so “Copy link” lets you share an exact sheet with a class or reprint it next week. The hour hand always sits where it really would, partway between two numbers when the time isn't o'clock, and the answer key gives the time both in digits and in words.

A step-by-step order for learning to tell time

Telling time is easier when each step adds only one new idea. Change the “Step” setting as you go: start with o'clock, where only the short hand moves and the long hand always points at 12. Then add half hours, then quarter hours, and only after that count in 5-minute steps and finally to the exact minute. Move up when a full sheet comes back mostly correct without counting on fingers.

Four kinds of clock worksheet

Each type practises a different direction of the same skill, so mixing them over a week works better than repeating one.

Counting in fives and clocks without numbers

The jump from quarter hours to 5-minute times is where most learners get stuck, because the number the long hand points to is not the number of minutes. Practise counting by fives from 12 — 5, 10, 15, 20 — while touching each number, until “the long hand on 4 means 20” is automatic.

Once that is solid, switch the clock face to “No numbers”. Only tick marks remain, with the longest, thickest ones at 12, 3, 6 and 9 — just like many wall clocks and watches. Roman numerals are another common face worth a few sheets; note that clocks traditionally write 4 as IIII.

Solving elapsed-time questions

Elapsed time is easiest in two moves: first add whole hours, then the minutes. If the minutes pass 60, move on to the next hour and keep the remainder — 2:45 plus 30 minutes is 3:15. These worksheets use a 12-hour clock, so after 12 comes 1 again. Keep the step setting the same as the reading level the learner already knows; the durations follow the same step.

Using the sheets in class and at home

Print the worksheet and its answer key together with “Print both”, or keep the key on screen with “Show answers” while marking. Because every sheet has a number, a whole class can work on the same sheet — share the link or write the number on the board. For a quick warm-up, a 6-clock sheet takes a few minutes; 16 or 20 clocks make a full practice session. In Spanish, both “las cuatro menos cuarto” and “un cuarto para las cuatro” are used; the answer key uses the first form.

Frequently asked questions

Are these telling time worksheets free to print?
Yes. Every worksheet is generated in your browser with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many you make or print. Teachers and parents can use them in class or at home.
How do I print the answer key?
Press “Print answer key” for the answers only, or “Print both (2 pages)” for the worksheet followed by its key. Each one fits on a single A4 page. For drawing worksheets the key shows the correct hands in red; for the others it gives the time in digits and in words.
Which step should I start with?
Start with o'clock, then half hours and quarter hours. Move to 5-minute and 1-minute times only when quarter hours are read without hesitation. Many school curricula introduce o'clock and half past first and the exact minute later, but go at the learner's pace.
Why is the hour hand between two numbers?
Because that is where it really is. On a real clock the hour hand moves a little every minute, so at 3:30 it sits halfway between 3 and 4, and at 3:45 it is close to 4. Learning to read “the number it has just passed” is a key step, and these clocks show it accurately.
Can I print clocks without numbers?
Yes. Set “Clock face” to “No numbers” and only the tick marks remain, with the longest, thickest ones at 12, 3, 6 and 9. You can also choose Roman numerals. The face is a display option, so the same sheet number gives the same times on any face.
Do the worksheets use a 12-hour or 24-hour clock?
A 12-hour clock, as on an analog face: hours run from 1 to 12, and in elapsed-time questions the time after 12 starts again at 1. Morning and afternoon are not marked.
